Scrapbook, 1889-1893.

Scrapbook kept by Charles D. Roberts while living in Chicago, Illinois, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. Contents are mostly newspaper clippings from Chicago and Wyoming newspapers, 1889-1892, concerning the United States Army, Indian wars, and military life, including a few articles identified by Roberts as written by himself. Many clippings concern operations of the 17th Infantry and social life in Cheyenne and at Fort David A. Russell, some referring to Cyrus S. Roberts; also present are many articles about Dakota Indian Wars, 1890-1891, the Johnson County War, and Wyoming statehood. Some articles are accompanied by holograph annotations written by Roberts concerning his knowledge of local events and opinions about the accuracy of news reports. Also present are holograph records of weather observations made by Roberts, most at Fort David A. Russell, 1890-1893, and four cyanotypes showing views of a farm in Sharon, Connecticut, 1890-1891. Accompanying the scrapbook are a few additional clippings and a few holograph notes and printed items, most relating to Fort David A. Russell and social events held there and to Cheyenne High School, from which Roberts graduated in 1891. The scrapbook includes a holograph list of contents and is accompanied by a typescript list of Roberts's annotations, prepared by a former owner.
